FITNESS CLASSES
Registration is not required for our Fitness Classes. There are also a variety of aquatic fitness classes described on our Aquatics page. Classes are on-going and included with membership.
All About Abs/Core
The name says it all! Experience engaged abs like never before. This 30 minute class focuses exclusively on the whole abdominal area. You will incorporate several different pieces of equipment along with your own body weight to deliver a very effective core workout.AOA (Active Older Adult) Forever Fit
This class will be offered at the Senior Center on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 8:45-9:30 am. It will be led by a YMCA fitness staff member. It is a great program for anyone interested in getting in fit or staying healthy. It will include low impact aerobics, strength training and stretching. This program runs on a punch card system and the cards are available from the instructor at the Senior Center.
Basic Yoga
This class is designed to introduce participants to yoga with the emphasis on learning the basic postures in a slow and controlled environment. This level works on form and technique and is great for relaxation and meditation.
Body Blast
This is a strength training class designed to give a full body workout. Enjoy lifting weights with music and an instructor for motivation. Instructors will also give specific instruction on proper weight lifting form and intensity levels. This class will benefit women and men of all skills. The instructors will utilize a variety of equipment.Cardio Kickboxing
An energizing cardio power workout. Cardio boxing includes basic moves, punches, jabs, upper cut, hooks, and a variety of kicks.Cycling
A fun, intense studio cycle class. This is an interval workout aimed to improve cardio endurance, burn fat and increase strength. All levels are welcome. Class size is limited. Cycling passes may be obtained 45 minutes before the class by calling the YMCA, 651-388-4724 or stopping by the Customer Service Counter.Cycle Circuit
This is a studio cycling class with a twist. . . alternating intervals of cardio work on the bike with strength training off of it. Staying on the bike for the class is an option for those who do not wish to do the strength training portions.
Go with the Flow Yoga
A vinyasa style yoga with an emphasis on stretching, balancing, lengthening and loosening the body and mind. With a focus on present awareness, we will move and flow through a variety of postures, harmonizing our physical movement with the breath and psyche to bring peace, release tension and fell wonderful inside and out.
Instructor's Choice
Every Saturday morning a different fitness instructor will offer their favorite class. The schedule for the month will be: September 4th - No Class, September 11th - 7:30 am - Kettlebell Workshop (Registration is required), 9:15 am - Zumba, September 18th - Step n Sculpt, September 25th - 9:30 am - Yoga & Chakras Workshop with Angie Viehman (a free 2 hour workshop, open to the all in the community). This class is a fusion workout of kickboxing, dance and martial arts. You will get a great cardiovascular workout as well as abdominal specific core strengthening. This fun aerobic workout will take you through 40 minutes of fun, funky and grooving moves that are easily adaptable for all fitness levels.
Kettlebells
For those who are interested in developing impressive gains in strength, mobility, internal energy, work capacity and vitality. A "Kettlebell" or girya, is a traditional Russian cast iron weight that looks like a cannonball with a handle. This is the ultimate class for all-around fitness. Classes will be run using passes and punch cards. Those that would like to participate in this class must have either taken a YMCA Kettlebell class or a workshop. Workshops will be offered periodically based on member interest.
Pilates
Pilates is designed to promote a balanced musculo-skeletal system, resulting in core strength, flexibility, good posture, and improved body awareness. Concentration and quality and precision of movement are emphasized. This requires attention to breath, head and neck alignments, scapula movement, rib cage and pelvic movement.Power Yoga
Power Yoga is a challenging and rigorous form of yoga characterized by a series of poses practiced in continual and rapid succession.
Power Vinysas Yoga
A more challenging form of yoga characterized by a series of poses practiced in a flowing succession. Emphasizing physical and mental strength, flexibility, stability and balance, Power Vinysasa Yoga at the YMCA promotes a present and peaceful mind, and a strong relaxed body.
SilverSneakers - Muscle Strength & Range of Movement
Have fun and move to the movement through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement, and activity for daily living skills. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball are offered for resistance, and a chair is used for seated and/or standing support.
SilverSneakers - Cardio Circuit
Combine fun and fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout. Upper body strength work using hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball is alternated with non-impact aerobic choreography. A chair is offered for support, head to toe stretching, and complete relaxation in a comfortable position.
Step
This class will provide an excellent workout with fun choreography using a step.Step-N-Sculpt
This class combines a high intensity step class with a great muscle sculpting routine that will tone and shape your entire body. Feel free to attend the step or sculpting portion separately.Willpower and Strength
A dynamic mosaic of the fitness industry's most popular (and most effective) group exercise workouts. Experience barefoot training fused with cardio, power yoga and functional training techniques that will help you increase your strength, balance and flexibility.ZUMBA
This newest addition to our fitness schedule is a Latin inspired "dance-fitness" class that incorporates Latin and international music and dance movements, creating a dynamic, exciting and effective cardio workout.
This body fat analysis is designed to assess your body composition. This measurement compares lean muscle mass to body fat. Over a 6 month period we can assess your body composition and analyze what parts of your body are improving lean muscle and what your specific body type needs to decrease body fat. This is a one-on-one appointment with a personal trainer that takes less than 10 minutes. Appointments are made on an individual basis and can be done by contacting Stephen McKenzie or JeriLyn Coplan. Cost: $20 per analysis
EXERCISE IS MEDICINE
This is a twelve (12) week health & wellness program that combines the expertise of a Fairview Red Wing Rehabilitation Therapist and a YMCA Personal Trainer. It is available to those who are undergoing treatment, dealing with a chronic illness or injury or those who need additional help improving their health. Participants will receive a 60 minute consultation with a Fairview physical therapist, a 60 minute consultation with a YMCA person trainer, a personalized exercise program and constant contact with the YMCA personal trainers. Exercise is Medicine is open to everyone in the community. It is done by appointment, please contact Fairview Rehabilitation at 267-5450.
Cost: $275 per person, $175 for YMCA members
Are you interested in improving your fitness level? By working with a YMCA Personal Trainer, we will design a workout that is perfect for you. Then, your Trainer will meet with you each time (if you wish) to exercise and provide encouragement and motivation. Adjustments will be made to your program as you make progress. Our Trainers are certified and offer flexible schedules. Contact JeriLyn Coplan for information and/or an appointment.
Cost: $52 per person, $40 for YMCA members (Discount packages are available)
Groups of 2 - 4 people can now get together for personal training! Members may organize their own group or may sign up and be placed in a group. A YMCA Personal Trainer will customize a workout program designed to fit your group's needs. This is a great way to get affordable training, get results, and meet new people. Cost per hour: $35 per person, $25 for YMCA members
The Safe Start Personal Fitness Program is a fitness concept that is designed for those who consider themselves inactive. It is a 6 week program that will help participants become a regular exerciser. You will meet one-on-one with a personal trainer to identify barriers to change and to develop strategies to overcome them. The program includes cardiovascular and strength components that are introduced in a step by step manner. The focus of Safe Start is on helping you develop skills and motivation you need to become the exerciser you want to be. Registration and payment is required. Cost: $65 per person, $25 for YMCA members.
Our Learn to Lift Program is intended for those who have been working out on their own and are no longer seeing any body changes. If you are ready for a fresh routine using a variety of equipment and exercises, this is for you. With this program, you will receive two sessions with a Personal Trainer and an eight week workout routine. The first PT session will be a consultation to help plan out and execute your exercise routine. The second PT session will be at the end of the program to evaluate your progress. Cost: $90 per person, $40 for YMCA members
Fairview Red Wing Health Services operate a Physical Therapy Satellite Clinic within the Wellness Center of the YMCA. The staff are experts in evaluation, treatment and rehab of athletic and recreational injuries. Appointments are available by calling 651-267-5450. Patients do not have to be YMCA members to receive physical therapy services. Rehab consultations are available on Wednesday afternoons from 4:30-5:00 pm on a first come, first served bases and are free.
Students will learn a short form of Tai Chi in this class. It's a form that will enable students to maintain and improve upon their physical and mental health. Tai Chi will meet on Friday evenings from 6:00-6:45 pm. Registration and payment are required. The next session of Tai Chi will begin September 11th.
Cost: $40 per person, $20 for YMCA members
NUTRITIONAL LIFESTYLES: WEIGHT TO GO
learn how to take weight off sensibly while learning how to eat healthy and exercise regularly in a manner that could be used to keep your extra weight off without pills and trendy diets? By working with a Registered Dietitian, you can learn how to lose weight safely as well as how to keep it off. Nutritional Lifestyles: Weight to Go is a 10 week course that meets in a group setting for 1 1/2 hours per week. Topics covered: Energy Balance, Strategies for Success, Food Measurement Tools, Exercise, Fats, Carbohydrates & fiber, Label Reading, Portion Distortion, Grocery Shopping, Cooking Techniques and Dining Out. Even if you don't need to lose weight but want to learn more about what you eat, this course is for you. For more information or to sign up contact David Anderson.

Interested in finding out more about how the equipment works in the Wellness Center? The YMCA offers free orientations for members. Trained YMCA staff members will teach you how to safely and correctly use all of the cardiovascular machines and/or the Cybex Strength Training equipment. Wellness Center Orientations are available to members age 18 and older. Appointments may be made by contacting Stephen McKenzie.
